The members of the team are specialists in investing in the technology, communications and media sectors on a global basis. This relatively narrow focus enables them to benefit from significant cross-referencing of information in what are truly international industries. This contrasts to the traditional investment management approach of breaking down the markets on a purely geographic or company-size basis and gives HIML significant potential to take advantage of this rapidly growing and evolving segment of the world’s economy.
Whilst the rates of evolution and adoption of technology, communications and all forms of media vary on a global basis, they are nevertheless non-parochial industries, with large players in countries in all continents contributing to its progress. HIML’s strategy is to leverage a global focus by piecing together the complex jigsaw of information, obtained through a comprehensive understanding of these industries and the companies participating in them.
Flexible and Comprehensive Approach
A variety of approaches and techniques are employed when appraising potential investments and making subsequent investment decisions. A totally doctrinaire approach is not considered applicable to the companies that fit within HIML’s remit. Instead, a combination of methods is used. This includes:
- fundamental financial analysis
- a detailed understanding of the products and services offered by the company
- a judgment as to the quality and relevant experience of the executive management
- an in-depth understanding of the markets and sectors in which the company competes
- a highly experienced view of world markets and economies.
As suggested above, a strong emphasis is placed on assessing the calibre of a company’s management and its capability to execute its business plans. Therefore, traditional company research is supplemented both by visits to a company's operating premises, and regular meetings between HIML and the executive management. Whilst this is most easily achieved with UK-based companies, significant emphasis is placed on keeping abreast of current activities abroad, including:
- the use of current communications technology
- extensive access to industry analysts worldwide
- frequent trips by the members of the HIML team to the USA, continental Europe and the Far East
- visits to the UK by the executive management of existing and potential foreign investee companies maintaining a consistently up-to-date picture of the companies, their industries and the evolutionary and revolutionary changes occurring in technology.
